
Europe Races to Develop Next-Generation Air-to-Air Missiles Amid Rising Threats
Europe is currently navigating through an intense period of development in beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air weapons technology. This push comes as a direct response to the rapid advancements made by China, particularly with its PL-15 and newer missile systems designed for stealth fighters. The recent India-Pakistan conflict has highlighted the critical importance of long-range missiles, underscoring the need for European nations to enhance their capabilities.
The incident in May 2025, where parts of a Pakistani PL-15E air-to-air missile landed intact in India's Punjab region following an aerial engagement, brought these concerns into sharp focus. Although Pakistan claims its Chinese-made fighters and missiles downed several Indian aircraft during the conflict, the exact details remain disputed.
Currently, MBDA’s Meteor is considered Europe’s leading BVR air-to-air missile, known for its advanced capabilities that have been extensively discussed in defense circles. However, there is now a growing emphasis on what will come after the Meteor, as European nations seek to maintain their edge against evolving threats.
One of the most promising developments is France's Comet program, which aims to surpass the current MICA family by offering greater range and speed. While details about Comet are scarce due to its secretive nature, it appears set for a 2030 launch, making it a timely response to an increasingly aggressive threat landscape.
Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), suggests that the emergence of programs like Comet is not coincidental. He notes that these initiatives are likely responses to recent conflicts where adversaries demonstrated advanced capabilities with long-range missiles.
In contrast to France's Comet program, the United Kingdom’s Future Air Superiority Effectors (FASE) initiative appears more closely tied to the longer-term requirements of its Future Combat Air System and GCAP/Tempest projects. This underscores a strategic divergence in how European nations are approaching the development of next-generation air-to-air missiles.
Justin Bronk, a research fellow for airpower at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), further elaborates on the significance of these developments. He emphasizes that Europe's approach to missile technology is crucial not only for immediate defense needs but also for future combat scenarios involving both crewed and uncrewed aircraft.
The push towards advanced BVR missiles reflects a broader shift in European military strategy, focusing on technological innovation to counteract rising threats from countries like China. As these programs progress, they will likely shape the future landscape of aerial warfare across the continent.
