Israel Seals Major Defense Deal with Greece for €3 Billion Air Shield

Israel and Greece have finalized a significant defense agreement worth approximately $3.5 billion, marking the largest-ever defense export deal for Israel to Greece. The pact involves Israel constructing an advanced multi-layered air defense system designed to bolster Greece's military modernization efforts.

The agreement was signed on Monday by officials from both countries' defense ministries and includes the supply of several cutting-edge Israeli defense systems. Amir Baram, director-general of Israel’s Defense Ministry, highlighted that this deal underscores Israel's technological prowess in the field of defense systems. The multi-layered air shield system, named Achilles Shield, will incorporate a range of sophisticated technologies.

Key components of the deal include the provision of David's Sling and SPYDER missile defense systems by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, alongside the BARAK MX system from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Additionally, MMR multi-mission radars for air surveillance, manufactured by IAI’s ELTA Systems unit, will be supplied to Greece. The David's Sling system has already proven its effectiveness in intercepting Iranian missiles during recent conflicts.

Greece's decision to invest heavily in such advanced defense systems is driven by the country's need to address security concerns stemming from long-standing tensions with Turkey. With a defense budget representing nearly 3.5% of its GDP, Greece allocates more resources to military spending compared to many NATO allies. The nation plans to allocate about €28 billion over the next decade and a half to develop comprehensive air defenses and acquire up to 40 F-35 fighter jets from the United States.

In addition to these systems, Israel will also provide Greece with Rafael's Drone Dome system, aimed at safeguarding critical sites against drone threats. This supplementary agreement includes an additional €26 million for this purpose. The deal further stipulates enhanced cooperation in defense industry collaboration between the two nations, facilitating technology and expertise transfers that could boost local industrial capabilities.

The signing of this substantial defense pact not only solidifies Israel’s position as a leading exporter of advanced military technologies but also strengthens strategic ties between Israel and Greece amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean.
