
Ancient Inca Storage Complex with Unique Ventilation System Unearthed in Peruvian Andes
Archaeologists have uncovered a sophisticated ancient storage complex featuring an advanced ventilation system at the Wancasanga archaeological site in Peru’s Cajamarca region. The discovery is situated nearly 3,400 meters above sea level and marks the beginning of formal excavations at this previously identified but little-studied location.
The Wancasanga Archaeological Research Project, led by archaeologist Jerry Solano Calderón, commenced its first field season in Sector C of the site. Excavations revealed a dozen circular structures arranged in a crescent shape along the edge of the dig area. These colcas, or storage facilities, were crucial for preserving agricultural products and other necessities during the Inca Empire era.
Among these structures, researchers found evidence of an intricate ventilation system, which consists of ducts made from hewn stone blocks topped with large slabs that served as roofs. According to Oswaldo Ezeta Latoche, a member of the research team, this design facilitated air circulation within the storage units, helping to maintain optimal conditions for preserving stored goods.
The location and orientation of these structures are particularly noteworthy. Positioned along the western edge of Sector C, where stronger winds prevail, the ventilation system appears to have been strategically placed to harness natural airflow patterns. This strategic placement suggests that ancient Inca engineers had a sophisticated understanding of environmental factors in their architectural designs.
Archaeologists also discovered fragments of an aryballos, a type of vessel commonly associated with state-maintained facilities during the Inca Empire. The presence of such artifacts further supports the notion that Wancasanga was not just any ordinary storage site but one managed by the central government for critical supplies.
This discovery adds to existing knowledge about ancient ventilation technologies used in colcas along the Qhapaq Ñan, an extensive road network built by the Inca Empire. The findings at Wancasanga highlight the ingenuity of pre-Hispanic engineers who integrated natural environmental conditions into their architectural designs to create sustainable and effective storage solutions.
The significance of this archaeological find extends beyond its technical aspects; it provides insights into the organizational and technological capabilities of ancient societies that inhabited high-altitude regions. As research continues, scientists hope to uncover more details about how these ventilation systems operated and contributed to the overall functionality and longevity of Inca infrastructure in challenging mountainous terrains.
