Missouri Man Arrested for Shooting and Killing Family Friend in Driveway

A 51-year-old man from Missouri has been arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of a 57-year-old woman who was shot while taking out the trash at her own home. Christopher Viley is accused of shooting Cheryl Gravitt in Moberly, a small town located approximately 40 miles north of Columbia.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on August 23 when a 911 call was made regarding a loud noise and a woman lying injured in her driveway. Upon arrival, officers found Gravitt with an apparent gunshot wound to the back of her head. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead.

Witnesses provided critical information to investigators, including seeing Viley running away from the scene shortly after hearing the gunshot. Surveillance footage corroborated this account by showing Viley in blue clothing near the location at the time of the shooting. Four days after the incident, on August 27, police apprehended Viley following a brief standoff about half a mile from where Gravitt was shot.

Viley appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Family members described Viley as a close family friend who had attended a barbecue at Gravitt's home with his children the day before the shooting. They expressed shock and disbelief over the violent turn of events, emphasizing how well they knew each other.

Gravitt’s girlfriend told local media that Viley was like an uncle to her and often brought his kids to Gravitt’s house for activities such as watching cartoons. The suddenness and brutality of the attack have left the family in a state of profound grief and confusion. "She helped everybody," said one of Gravitt's twin sisters, expressing disbelief at the senseless nature of the crime.

Police records indicate that Viley has a history of violent behavior, including two assault convictions from the 1990s and an arrest for resisting arrest in 2022. He was also charged with domestic assault earlier this year, adding to his criminal background. As a result of these charges, he is currently being held without bond at the Randolph County Jail.

Viley's next court appearance is scheduled for September 8, where further details of the case will likely be discussed and evidence presented. The tragic incident highlights the unpredictable nature of violence among acquaintances and underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
