Pentagon Launches Mobile SCIF Initiative to Boost National Security Innovation

The Department of Defense has initiated a new program called the "Secure Space Network" aimed at facilitating access for small businesses and innovators to classified work environments. The initiative involves the creation of approximately 50 mobile Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) that can be swiftly deployed across various locations nationwide, including military bases and industry sites. These facilities will enable companies with technologies relevant to national security to engage in classified discussions and development without the need for substantial infrastructure investments.

James Mismash, director of the Office of Small Business Programs at the Pentagon, highlighted the importance of overcoming barriers that hinder small businesses from entering the defense industrial base. He emphasized that the Secure Space Network will significantly reduce entry hurdles by providing more companies with access to classified environments, thereby accelerating capability development for military operations.

The mobile SCIF project is part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump's administration to expand and diversify the U.S. defense industry. This initiative aims to address bottlenecks that have historically impeded the integration of new technologies into military systems. By fostering collaboration between government agencies and private sector entities, the program seeks to enhance both innovation and operational readiness.

The project will be managed by the Office of Industrial Base Growth within the Pentagon’s Acquisition and Sustainment directorate. While the initial phase focuses on producing 50 mobile SCIFs, officials anticipate potential expansion based on demand.
