Georgia Man Sentenced to Life for Murdering Girlfriend’s Cousin in Front of Family

A man from Villa Rica, Georgia, has been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus 136 years after being found guilty of malice murder and other charges related to a violent home invasion. Karlton Sirmons, 38, was convicted for fatally shooting Tavarus Joiner, 32, in front of his family on November 2, 2024.

The incident occurred when Sirmons broke into the home where his girlfriend was staying with her cousin, Tavarus Joiner. The girlfriend had sought refuge at Joiner's residence to escape from Sirmons. Around 6 a.m., Sirmons kicked down the front door of the house on Serenity Point Lane in Villa Rica, approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta.

Upon entering, Sirmons encountered Joiner at the top of the stairs and shot him in the chest. He then proceeded upstairs where he fatally shot Joiner again in the back before turning his weapon against Joiner's girlfriend, shooting her eight times. Additionally, Sirmons pistol-whipped a 5-year-old boy who was present during the attack.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene but found that Joiner had already died by the time they arrived. The other victims were treated for their injuries and transported to local hospitals. A nearby security camera captured footage of Sirmons leaving the home shortly after the initial 911 call, leading to his apprehension in Atlanta less than three hours later.

During the trial, prosecutors highlighted that Sirmons had ceased the attack only because he ran out of ammunition. The sentencing decision reflects the severity and brutality of his actions, which left a family devastated and traumatized by the loss of their loved one.

A GoFundMe page set up for Joiner's family describes him as "a monster" who broke into their home and killed Joiner in front of his children. The fundraiser emphasizes that Joiner did not know Sirmons and had no reason to expect such a violent intrusion, underscoring the randomness and horror of the crime.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its shocking nature and the severe consequences faced by both the perpetrator and the victims' families.
