Car Bomb Attack in Zacatecas Signals Escalating Cartel Conflict

The recent car bomb attack in Ojocaliente, Zacatecas, has heightened tensions between rival cartels and raised concerns about escalating violence. Mexican authorities suspect the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was behind the blast, which occurred outside a police headquarters on August 30, 2026. The explosion injured at least eleven people and damaged more than 63 homes and 15 vehicles in the area.

This attack is part of an ongoing territorial dispute between the CJNG and the Mayiza faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Five bodies were found hanged from bridges along the Zacatecas–Saltillo highway, signaling a return to more brutal forms of conflict resolution.
