National Guardsman Charged with Felony After Weapon Drawn Over Grooming Dispute

A 21-year-old Georgia National Guardsman, Spc. Zion Mitchell, has been charged with felony offenses following an incident that occurred on August 25 in Washington, D.C., where he allegedly drew his weapon during a dispute over Army grooming standards. The altercation took place while the guardsmen were taking a break from their patrol duties and sitting inside a parked van near a Popeyes restaurant located at H Street in Northeast D.C.

According to court documents filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, Mitchell faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The incident was reported by multiple witnesses who were present at the scene and corroborated N.J.'s account that the argument began over hairstyle regulations.

The Army has recently updated its grooming policies to include stricter guidelines on hairstyles for both male and female soldiers, which appears to have been a point of contention between Mitchell and his colleague during their break.

Mitchell is among more than 3,000 National Guardsmen who were mobilized to Washington, D.C., last year to assist with crime prevention efforts. His unit has been deployed in the nation's capital since January 2025 as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and reducing crime rates.
