Scientists Unveil Bizarre New Microbe with Unique "Alien" Reproduction Method

Scientists have recently unveiled a newly discovered marine microorganism that reproduces in an unprecedented manner, reminiscent of the horror depicted in the sci-fi film *Alien*. The organism, named *Caledochytrium aldermanii*, was found to create entirely new cells inside its body before rupturing and releasing them into the environment. This reproductive strategy is unlike any previously observed in marine microorganisms.

The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by Professor Peter Morris from Heriot-Watt University, who described the process as "alien-like" due to its unique nature. According to Morris, instead of dividing into two cells, mature *Caledochytrium aldermanii* cells develop an internal chamber where new daughter cells grow. Some of these daughters are already carrying another developing generation inside them before they are released when the mother cell breaks open.

This reproductive method is particularly unusual because it allows for a multi-generational cycle within a single organism, similar to how some species of greenfly can be born pregnant. This complex lifecycle suggests that *Caledochytrium aldermanii* has evolved sophisticated mechanisms to ensure its survival and propagation in challenging marine environments.

*Caledochytrium aldermanii*, part of the Labyrinthulomycetes group, plays a crucial role in nutrient recycling by breaking down dead plants and animals in salty environments. These microorganisms are known for their ecological importance and potential commercial value due to their ability to produce omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and carotenoids used in food coloring.

The newly discovered species also contains approximately 50% protein, adding further to its potential applications in the production of food supplements, infant formula, and aquaculture. This makes *Caledochytrium aldermanii* a promising candidate for future research into sustainable food sources and nutritional products.

The discovery underscores the ongoing importance of exploring marine ecosystems, where many unique species with valuable properties remain to be identified. As scientists continue to uncover such organisms, they not only expand our understanding of biodiversity but also open up new avenues for practical applications in fields ranging from nutrition to biotechnology.
