The study focuses on two specific tombs: the Tomba del Gallo and a larger unnamed tomb. Using detailed three-dimensional models of both structures, researchers conducted acoustic surveys by playing recorded handclaps at various locations within each chamber to measure sound decay and propagation. They found that low-frequency sounds under 1,000 Hz played a crucial role in creating unique sensory experiences for visitors.
In the Tomba del Gallo, built between 450 and 400 BCE, researchers discovered a steep stairway leading down to a main chamber adorned with paintings of banquets and musicians. The team's findings indicate that this tomb was designed to create a calming environment through its acoustics. Short reverberation times in the chamber prevent sound buildup, instead allowing it to rise and move away from the space. This combination of clear sightlines and short reverberation is linked to alpha-band brain activity, which is often associated with relaxed alertness and focused visual attention.
The larger unnamed tomb presents a stark contrast, offering a more immersive sensory experience. The team's analysis suggests that this tomb was designed to induce disorientation and altered states of consciousness through its acoustics and architectural features. Areas of high curvature in the chamber walls function as focal points for ritual activities, while lighting relied on candlelight to avoid smoke buildup from torches.
These findings challenge traditional interpretations of Etruscan tombs as mere repositories for the dead. Instead, they suggest that these structures were carefully engineered environments intended to evoke specific emotional and cognitive responses in visitors. The research highlights the sophisticated understanding of sensory manipulation by ancient civilizations, offering new insights into how art and architecture were used to influence human experience.
