U.S. Army Advances Two Teams in Race for New Mid-Tier Anti-Air Missile

The U.S. Army has narrowed down the competition to develop a new mid-tier surface-to-air missile for its Enduring Shield system, selecting teams from Boeing and Anduril, as well as Lockheed Martin, to proceed to phase two of the Integrated Fires Protection Capability Increment 2 (IFPC Inc 2) Second Interceptor program. The Army's decision follows an initial round of evaluations that saw Rafael Systems Global Sustainment eliminated from further consideration.

The Enduring Shield system, which is currently operational and equipped with AIM-9X Sidewinders for short-to-medium range defense against aerial threats including drones, has been in development since at least 2023. The Army's push to integrate a second interceptor into the Enduring Shield framework aims to enhance its capabilities, particularly against incoming cruise missiles.

Boeing and Anduril unveiled their offering earlier this year, marking the first public appearance of a model that features a solid-fuel rocket motor provided by Anduril. Boeing emphasized the design as a clean-sheet approach with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and modularity. The company's rendering of the missile revealed two sets of fins at the tail end, which could indicate additional booster rockets necessary for ground-launch applications.

Lockheed Martin also entered the competition last year with its own rendering but has not yet provided extensive details about its design or capabilities beyond initial conceptual stages. Both Boeing and Lockheed Martin are focusing on delivering a reliable and affordable solution to protect against aerial threats, in line with the Army's requirements for this critical defense system.

The selection of these two teams reflects the Army’s strategic approach to diversifying suppliers and fostering innovation within the defense industry. The competition underscores the ongoing need for advanced air defense systems as potential adversaries continue to develop sophisticated cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
