Tennessee Couple Charged with Neglect for Making Vulnerable Teen Live in Shed

Amanda Sewell, 38, and her boyfriend Brandon Cox, 33, have been charged with caregiver neglect of a vulnerable adult after allegedly forcing an 18-year-old autistic teenager to reside in a shed without basic amenities. The incident came to light when the victim contacted authorities for assistance.

According to Cheatham County Sheriff's Office reports, the teen had been living in a shed behind Sewell’s property since February, shortly after his 18th birthday. Authorities found that the shed lacked running water, electricity, and a bathroom facility. On particularly hot days with temperatures reaching up to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, the teenager was left without air conditioning or even power for extended periods.

The mother reportedly told law enforcement officers that she had taken away her son's access to electricity as an incentive for him to find employment. However, this drastic measure led to severe living conditions and a lack of proper hygiene facilities. The teen was fed through a window and instructed to drink water from the garden hose, while being barred from entering the main house when Cox was present.

Deputies noted that doorknobs were removed from back doors of the residence as an additional restriction on the teenager's movements. He had no choice but to use a bag for toileting purposes inside the shed and was eventually taken to a hospital due to dehydration caused by these harsh living conditions.

During their investigation, law enforcement officials discovered significant trash accumulation and minimal bedding in the shed where the teen resided. The victim’s health deteriorated under such substandard living conditions, prompting immediate intervention from authorities who removed him from the property for his safety.

Both Sewell and Cox were arrested and booked into Cheatham County Jail but have since been released on bond. They are scheduled to appear in court on November 25th to face charges related to caregiver neglect of a vulnerable adult. The case highlights the severe consequences that can arise when caregivers fail to provide adequate care for individuals with special needs.

This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring proper living conditions and support systems for vulnerable adults, particularly those with disabilities like autism. Authorities are emphasizing the need for better oversight and intervention mechanisms to prevent such cases in the future.
