Army Trainee Fatally Struck While Walking Near Fort Sill Base

On September 11 before dawn, Pfc. Ocean K. Winfrey, a 27-year-old basic trainee at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along Interstate 44 near the base's Key Gate entrance. The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m., just outside mile marker 41.

Winfrey had enlisted as a network communications specialist and arrived at Fort Sill in August to begin his Basic Combat Training. He was assigned to Bravo Battery, part of the 1st Battalion, 79th Field Artillery Regiment within the 434th Field Artillery Brigade. The tragic event has deeply affected the brigade's members.

Col. Tony H. Brunner, commander of the 434th Field Artillery Brigade, expressed profound sorrow over Winfrey’s death. "When Ocean raised his right hand to serve, he stepped forward to be part of something greater than himself," Brunner stated in an Army release. The brigade extends its condolences and support to Winfrey's family, loved ones, and fellow soldiers during this challenging time.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Fort Sill officials confirmed that Winfrey was on foot near the interstate at the time of the collision but did not elaborate on his specific activities or intentions for being in that location.
