Saudi Coalition Claims Intercept of Drone Near Mecca Amid Tensions with Houthis

The Saudi-led coalition announced Tuesday evening that it had intercepted a hostile drone attempting to enter restricted airspace near the holy city of Mecca. The incident has raised tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels, who have denied responsibility for the attack.

Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces shot down the drone before it could reach its intended target. However, a Houthi official dismissed these claims as baseless, asserting that their forces do not target religious sites and labeling the accusation as a "worn-out lie."

The incident comes amid ongoing conflicts between Saudi Arabia and Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen. Israeli media reports suggest that Israel is quietly providing intelligence to Saudi Arabia to help counter Houthi threats. These developments indicate a growing alignment among regional powers wary of Iranian influence.

According to Israeli diplomatic sources, direct dialogue facilitated by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has enabled discussions between Israel and Saudi Arabia over potential intelligence sharing. Jerusalem Post reports that such exchanges are already underway, with Israel supplying information on Houthi military positions, weapons infrastructure, and operational plans to bolster Riyadh's defenses.

CENTCOM chief Bradley Cooper met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia last week, where the prince urgently requested military assistance from Washington and London. While Britain is reportedly considering a new intervention in Yemen, other regional powers like Egypt are also being approached for support.

Saudi Arabia has faced increasing missile and drone attacks in recent months, prompting heightened security measures around its oil infrastructure. The kingdom's efforts to repair damaged pipelines have been hampered by continued threats from Shia militias in Iraq, further complicating the situation.
