Textron and Merlin Labs Unveil Autonomous SkyCourier for Military Logistics

Textron, the parent company of Cessna, has partnered with autonomy specialist Merlin Labs to introduce an unmanned version of its SkyCourier aircraft designed specifically for military logistics. The new drone variant, known as SkyCourier UX, was showcased at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference in Washington, D.C., this week.

The SkyCourier UX is a converted version of the existing Cessna 408 SkyCourier model, which has been serving various commercial and military purposes since its introduction six years ago. The aircraft's design includes a unique feature—a nose that opens hydraulically to reveal a cargo bay instead of a cockpit—allowing for easy loading and unloading of large cargo without the need for specialized equipment.

The drone variant maintains the same physical characteristics as its manned counterpart, featuring twin turboprop engines, a high-wing configuration, and an aluminum body. This design ensures compatibility with standard pallets, facilitating efficient transportation and delivery of supplies across diverse environments. The aircraft's payload capacity remains at approximately 6,000 pounds, capable of carrying up to three LD3 standard containers.

Bob Gibbs, Textron’s vice president of special missions sales, highlighted the versatility of the SkyCourier in various global settings during a Monday briefing. "The aircraft is being operated from the Arctic to the Amazon," he noted, emphasizing its widespread use across 170 countries for medical evacuation and environmental protection missions.

Merlin Labs aims to leverage Textron's extensive experience with the SkyCourier to rapidly develop and deploy the unmanned version. The partnership seeks to offer a proven capability that can be sustained consistently over time. Kyle Kremer, a retired Air Force major general who now advises Merlin, explained the strategic importance of the drone in contested environments: "This is about agilely moving through the second island chain and connecting logistics pipelines."

The SkyCourier UX has a range of approximately 900 nautical miles, making it suitable for operations involving Pacific island-hopping. It can operate from austere runways, taking off on stretches as short as 3,300 feet and landing in just 2,500 feet. This capability is crucial for maintaining supply lines in remote or hostile areas.

While the aircraft's range falls short of bridging the nearly 2,000-mile gap between the first and second island chains, its operational flexibility allows it to effectively support logistics networks by shuttling supplies between smaller islands within these regions. The collaboration between Textron and Merlin Labs represents a significant step in advancing unmanned aerial technology for military applications, enhancing logistical capabilities while reducing risks associated with manned operations in contested areas.
