US Navy Allocates $200 Million to Castelion for Hypersonic Blackbeard Missile

The U.S. Navy has awarded a significant contract worth $200 million to defense startup Castelion for the production of its hypersonic missile, known as Blackbeard. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the Navy's efforts to rapidly integrate advanced technology into its arsenal through innovative acquisition methods.

Castelion, a relatively new player in the defense industry, has successfully secured this substantial funding from the Department of the Navy Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO). The RCO has been instrumental in adapting its procurement processes to expedite the delivery of critical capabilities to the warfighter. By leveraging commercial manufacturing techniques and streamlined production lines, Castelion's Blackbeard missile is being positioned as a cost-effective solution for enhancing fleet readiness.

Blackbeard is designed as an air-launched hypersonic strike weapon capable of engaging both maritime and land targets from up to 200 nautical miles away. The missile is intended for use by carrier-based aircraft such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the F/A-18/E/F Super Hornet, providing these platforms with a responsive and long-range offensive option against advanced air defenses.

The Navy's interest in hypersonic missiles stems from its need to counter emerging threats posed by adversaries' sophisticated air defense systems. Prior attempts to develop such capabilities through programs like Hypersonic Air-Launched Offensive Anti-Surface Warfare (HALO) faced challenges, including budgetary constraints that led to the program's cancellation in 2024.

Castelion's Blackbeard missile stands out due to its affordability and scalability. The company's emphasis on low-cost production aligns with the Navy's strategic goals of increasing magazine depth and enhancing survivability against modern threats. This approach also reduces the financial burden typically associated with traditional defense procurement processes, allowing for more rapid deployment of new technologies.

In February 2023, Castelion received an initial contract worth nearly $50 million after being selected for the Navy's Multimission Affordable Capacity Effector (MACE) program. The service has allocated a total of $156 million in its fiscal year 2027 budget request to procure 353 MACE missiles, with an additional $23.4 million awarded in June for pre-production prototypes and associated logistics support.

The current contract leverages provisions from the Small Business Innovation Development Act within the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. This legislation facilitates the transition of privately funded technology directly into production, thereby minimizing redundant engineering costs and fostering competition among commercial suppliers in the munitions sector.

With Castelion's Blackbeard missile entering full-scale production, the Navy is poised to address a critical gap in its offensive capabilities while maintaining fiscal discipline. The successful implementation of this program could set a precedent for future rapid acquisition initiatives aimed at equipping naval forces with cutting-edge weaponry.
