Woman Sentenced to 33 Years for Shaking Toddler to Death

A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to 33 years in prison after being convicted of the death of her boyfriend's son due to severe child neglect. The incident occurred on May 16, 2024, when Kassandra Bracewell called emergency services stating that a toddler was dead and she believed she had caused harm to him. Upon arrival at the scene, police found the boy, Jalen "JJ" Harding, who was only 17 months old, in critical condition.

Initial reports suggested that the child's injuries were accidental, as Bracewell told authorities that JJ had climbed out of his crib and hit his head on a dresser. However, medical professionals at the children’s hospital where JJ was taken quickly discovered inconsistencies between Bracewell's account and the actual nature of the toddler's injuries. An autopsy later revealed that JJ's brain was more liquid than solid due to severe shaking, confirming shaken-baby syndrome.

Bracewell was arrested May 25, 2024, on charges related to child neglect. During her trial, she denied making statements on the initial 911 call indicating that she had caused harm to JJ. However, evidence and testimony from a detective who investigated the case painted a different picture. The detective testified that when he arrived at the scene, JJ was almost lifeless, leading him to believe initially that the injuries were accidental.

Bracewell's mother, Marjie S. Bracewell-Cook, provided additional details during the trial, alleging that Bracewell had expressed frustration over JJ’s constant crying and pushed him backward into his crib. She also claimed that Bracewell instructed another child present not to reveal what truly happened to the authorities.

On August 20, Bracewell pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office confirmed that she was sentenced on September 15 to 30 years in state prison with three years suspended. This decision came after intense public and legal scrutiny over the case, which highlighted the severe consequences of child abuse.

Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Lynsey N. Fleetwood issued a statement following Bracewell’s sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of her actions. "Seventeen months old. This child was just a baby, innocent, defenseless, and entirely dependent upon the adults responsible for his care and protection," she said. "Instead of being protected, this little boy lost his life because of Kassandra Bracewell's criminal neglect."

In court, Bracewell expressed remorse but acknowledged that her words fell far short of addressing the enormity of her actions. She stated, “I’m sorry don’t begin to scratch the surface of how I feel.” The victim’s father, Andrew Finley, read a letter in court expressing his dissatisfaction with the sentence length, believing it did not adequately reflect the severity and impact of Bracewell's crime.
