Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Reveals 80-Pound Weight Loss Due to Diabetes Medication
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker disclosed Monday that he has been managing his Type 2 diabetes with GLP-1 medication since a diagnosis two years ago. This revelation marks the first time Pritzker has publicly acknowledged both his condition and his use of GLP-1 drugs, which have helped him lose 80 pounds and significantly improve his health.
During an interview with CBS News, Pritzker explained that he started taking the medication after doctors warned him about the likelihood of needing insulin for life. The governor’s decision to go public with this information comes as speculation mounts over a potential presidential run in 2028. His weight loss and improved health have been a topic of discussion among political observers, particularly given his visibly slimmer appearance at events.
Pritzker's journey with weight management began long before his diagnosis. He has struggled with his weight since childhood, noting that it was around the age of seven when he first became aware of his body image issues, coinciding with the tragic loss of his father to a heart attack while playing tennis. The governor’s health concerns grew more serious after becoming Illinois’ leader in 2019, as the stress associated with running the sixth-largest state by population contributed to additional weight gain.
The GLP-1 medication has not only helped Pritzker manage his diabetes but also led to significant lifestyle changes. He credits improved diet and exercise routines for his overall health transformation. As a result of these efforts, he is no longer dependent on insulin and now maintains blood sugar levels that indicate either no diabetes or prediabetes status.
Pritzker’s weight loss journey has garnered local attention as well. The governor frequently takes walks along the Lake Michigan path in Chicago, engaging with constituents and promoting his healthier lifestyle choices. During a recent interview, he also expressed pride in Illinois’ decision to cover GLP-1 medications for people with diabetes, emphasizing how access to such treatments can save lives.
Despite mounting speculation about a potential presidential bid, Pritzker remains focused on his role as governor of Illinois. In the CBS interview, he declined to comment directly on whether he plans to run for president in 2028 but acknowledged that his health improvements have made him feel more capable of handling such a demanding position if it were to arise.
The announcement comes at a time when Pritzker is increasingly involved in national Democratic politics. He recently launched a political action committee aimed at investing $20 million in support for House Democrats during the 2026 midterm elections, further fueling speculation about his future ambitions beyond Illinois. As he navigates these new roles, Pritzker’s health and stamina will undoubtedly be areas of scrutiny as he considers a possible national campaign.
