North Korea Conducts Hypersonic Missile Test with Updated Hwasong-11Ma

North Korea recently conducted a test of an updated version of its Hwasong-11Ma hypersonic missile from the east coast near Anbyon County, south of Wonsan. The test involved launching a short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) booster fitted with a hypersonic glide vehicle, as shown in images released by North Korean state media. This marks nearly a year since the weapon was first publicly unveiled at a military technology exhibition in Pyongyang.

The September 20 launch took place from a coastal location that allows missiles to be fired eastward over the Sea of Japan, providing a controlled area for testing short- and medium-range systems. South Korean and Japanese authorities reported detecting two launches on this day, with the first occurring around 3:00 p.m. local time and another several hours later.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was present at the test site along with senior missile officials and his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The imagery released by state media includes clear shots of the launch sequence and the observation team monitoring the progress from a safe distance.

The Hwasong-11Ma is part of North Korea's ongoing efforts to develop advanced hypersonic capabilities as part of its broader strategic military modernization program. This missile uses the basic architecture of the KN-23 family but incorporates a distinctive wedge-shaped glide vehicle for enhanced maneuverability and speed, critical features in evading enemy defenses.

North Korea first showcased the Hwasong-11Ma at the Defense Development-2025 exhibition in October 2025. The missile was later displayed again during a military parade in Pyongyang, underscoring its significance to North Korean defense strategy. While details of specific modifications made for this latest test are sparse, the imagery indicates an updated launcher configuration with a six-axle transporter-erector-launcher (TEL), compared to the five-axle TEL used previously.

The iterative development and testing of hypersonic missiles like the Hwasong-11Ma reflect North Korea's commitment to advancing its military technology despite international sanctions.
