Arizona Man Sentenced to Life for Bludgeoning 91-Year-Old Stepfather with Hammer

In Maricopara County, Arizona, a tragic murder case has concluded with Gary Crawford being sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 21 years. The crime occurred when Crawford, the son of Oscar Casdorph's wife, brutally attacked his elderly stepfather and attempted to harm his stepmother on September 23.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, law enforcement received a call from a concerned woman requesting a welfare check for her father, 91-year-old Oscar Casdorph. Upon arrival at the residence, officers discovered that both Casdorph and his wife had been violently assaulted with a hammer. While Casdorph was found dead at the scene, his wife survived despite sustaining severe injuries, including a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators identified Crawford as the prime suspect in the attack after he fled the scene following the assault. He had recently moved into the home with Casdorph and his wife but disappeared along with one of the household's cars shortly after the incident. Police tracked him down by tracing the use of Casdorph’s bank card, which Crawford had stolen before fleeing.

During an interview with police, Crawford admitted to “snapping” during a moment of intense anger, leading to the violent outburst that resulted in his stepfather's death and his stepmother's injury. His sister, Allison Fordham, told KPNX that she was not surprised by the attack, describing Crawford as a "ticking time bomb."

Crawford pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder charges. He received the maximum sentence on September 23 during a court hearing presided over by Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

Mitchell emphasized in her statement that Crawford’s actions were particularly heinous, as his family had taken him in despite his history of instability. She stated, “This defendant’s family took him in, and he betrayed them in the worst way imaginable.” The attorney affirmed that the harsh sentence ensures Crawford will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
