USS Theodore Roosevelt Sets Sail for Middle East as Fifth Carrier Joins Iran Conflict

The USS Theodore Roosevelt has departed San Diego and is now operating in the Pacific theater ahead of its anticipated deployment to the Middle East. This move marks the fifth U.S. aircraft carrier committed to operations related to the ongoing conflict with Iran, which began seven months ago on February 28.

According to a statement from the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group is currently conducting routine operations within the Third Fleet's area of responsibility. The Navy generally refrains from disclosing specific deployment details but has previously indicated that the Roosevelt will be heading to the Middle East as part of ongoing efforts in the region.

Theodore Roosevelt’s sailors and their families were informed earlier this year about the possibility of an eight-month deployment, with potential extensions depending on operational needs. This comes amid a broader trend of extended carrier deployments driven by heightened tensions and military engagements in the Middle East.

As the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 9, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to relieve the USS George Washington in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility. The deployment was first reported by local media outlets like the San Diego Union-Tribune, with video footage captured by ship tracker WarshipCam showing the carrier leaving port on September 27.

The Navy has maintained a continuous presence in the Middle East since the start of hostilities, currently operating two carrier strike groups in the region. The USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush are already deployed there, according to USNI News reports. With the addition of Theodore Roosevelt, five out of eleven active U.S. aircraft carriers have now been committed to operations connected to the conflict.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman highlighted that lessons learned from previous extended deployments are being applied to ensure smoother operations for the Theodore Roosevelt. These preparations focus particularly on logistics, aiming to mitigate challenges faced by earlier carriers during their prolonged missions in the region.
