Florida Liquor Store Clerk and Accomplice Arrested for Inside Job Disguised as Robbery

A liquor store clerk in Citrus County, Florida, has been arrested alongside an alleged accomplice after they staged what appeared to be a robbery but was actually an inside job. The incident occurred on September 20 when the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed robbery at a local liquor store.

Deputies arrived to find clerk Renee Bedford, 46, who claimed that a masked individual resembling Michael Myers from the "Halloween" franchise had entered the store and demanded cash. She stated that she complied with his demands before he fled the scene. However, upon reviewing surveillance footage, investigators noticed inconsistencies in Bedford’s account of events.

The video showed Bedford laughing during the incident, which raised suspicions among law enforcement officials. Additionally, the suspect's appearance did not match her initial description to deputies; while she had reported seeing a Black man, the footage revealed that the individual was white. These discrepancies prompted further investigation into the case.

Following these inconsistencies, the sheriff’s office received information suggesting 47-year-old Richard Lassiter as a possible suspect. During an interview with investigators, Lassiter alleged that Bedford had orchestrated the plan and provided him with crucial details about the store's operations, including its cash deposit procedures and surveillance system specifics. This revelation led to Bedford being questioned further.

Bedford reportedly appeared nervous during her interview and denied any involvement in planning the robbery. However, deputies were able to establish probable cause for her arrest based on evidence collected during their investigation. Additionally, bags containing drugs such as fentanyl and methamphetamine were found in her possession.

Both individuals have been charged with various offenses: Bedford faces charges of principal to armed robbery, principal to grand theft, possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine, and possession of paraphernalia. Lassiter is charged with robbery with a firearm and grand theft.

Captain Mat Baird from the Criminal Investigations Division emphasized the importance of thorough investigative work in uncovering such elaborate schemes. He stated that while the suspect’s mask initially concealed his identity, detectives quickly identified inconsistencies that exposed this inside job as an attempt to disguise criminal activity.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in sophisticated crimes like staged robberies. The detailed nature of Bedford's alleged involvement underscores the need for vigilant surveillance and comprehensive investigative techniques to prevent such incidents from occurring and to bring perpetrators to justice effectively.
