Democratic Senator Fetterman Alone in Opposing Resolution to Hold Israel Accountable for U.S. Citizen Killings

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania stood alone among his party colleagues Tuesday when he voted against a resolution aimed at holding Israeli soldiers and settlers accountable for killing American citizens in the West Bank. The measure, which sought to compel the State Department to report on investigations into nine such killings since 2022, was narrowly defeated by a vote of 51-47.

Fetterman's stance highlights the increasingly polarized views within the Democratic Party regarding Israel. While nearly all Democrats supported the resolution, Fetterman’s hardline pro-Israel position led him to oppose it despite one of his constituents being among those killed recently in the West Bank by Israeli settlers.

The slain constituent was a 19-year-old from Philadelphia who died at the hands of right-wing Jewish settlers. Local Pennsylvania officials had called for an investigation into this incident, but neither Fetterman nor his Republican counterpart, Senator Dave McCormick, supported the Senate measure that would have required such action.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., the sponsor of the resolution, expressed frustration at the lack of transparency from both the Biden and Trump administrations regarding investigations into these killings. He emphasized the difficulty faced by Palestinian families in seeking justice compared to U.S. citizens who hold passports.

Van Hollen’s measure aimed not only to require reports on ongoing investigations but also to address broader issues such as the status of American citizens detained in Israeli prisons or military detention facilities, including a 16-year-old Palestinian-American boy from Florida who has been incarcerated for an extended period.

Advocates hoped that by pushing this resolution through, they could gather evidence necessary to determine whether Israel's actions meet the criteria under U.S. law for imposing an arms embargo due to gross human rights violations. The vote’s outcome underscores the delicate balance between diplomatic relations and accountability in U.S.-Israel ties.

The near-unanimous support from Democrats, coupled with almost universal opposition from Republicans, reflects a deepening ideological divide within Congress on how to approach Israel's treatment of American citizens and Palestinians alike. This debate is likely to continue as tensions persist in the region and domestic political pressures mount for more assertive U.S. action.
