Chinese Lawyer Fleeing Country Amid Government Crackdown on Unsanctioned Church

Chinese lawyer Ruth Wang has fled the country with her family after facing intense pressure from authorities over her legal representation of members of Zion Church, a Christian congregation not recognized by the Chinese government. In October 2025, Chinese officials arrested 18 members of Zion Church, including its founder and pastor Ezra Jin, in what was seen as part of a broader crackdown on religious groups that operate outside state-sanctioned frameworks.

Wang served alongside other attorneys at VDoor Law Firm to defend the detained church members. However, the legal team soon found themselves under scrutiny from Chinese authorities who demanded they dissolve their law practice and cease representing Zion Church in any capacity. The firm's lawyers were instructed to resign from their positions, with some facing suspension from practicing law for six months.

The founder of VDoor Law Firm, Zhang Kai, suffered even harsher penalties. He lost his law license and was barred from leaving China as part of the government’s efforts to suppress legal representation for religious groups that do not conform to state regulations. Wang herself received a summons while on vacation in Japan, where officials requested she meet upon her return to discuss her involvement with Zion Church.

Instead of complying with these demands, Wang took an unexpected route and traveled to Taiwan. There, she is now seeking asylum for herself and her family, aiming to resettle them in countries like the United States or Canada. Her decision underscores the severe consequences faced by legal professionals who advocate on behalf of religious groups that are not sanctioned by the Chinese government.

This case highlights a broader pattern of increasing restrictions placed upon independent religious organizations within China. The actions taken against Wang and her colleagues reflect an ongoing effort to curtail any form of legal defense for individuals or groups deemed non-compliant with state policies, thereby limiting their ability to seek justice through formal channels.
