Parents Sue Man Accused of Killing Pregnant Wife and Fleeing to Italy
A lawsuit has been filed by the parents of Christa Gilley against her accused killer, Lee Gilley, who is currently in hiding in Italy. The case centers around the tragic death of Christa Gilley, 38, who was pregnant with their third child when she died on October 8, 2024. Gilley, 39, had initially pleaded not guilty to charges of capital murder but fled the country while out on bond.
According to court documents reviewed by Court TV, Christa Gilley’s parents, Christopher and Sharon Bauer, allege that Lee Gilley intentionally attacked their daughter, causing her death through strangulation. The lawsuit seeks more than $1 million in damages for the wrongful deaths of both Christa and her unborn child.
The case took a dramatic turn when investigators discovered that Gilley had absconded to Europe using forged Belgian documents under an assumed name. He cut off his ankle monitor on May 1, 2023, and landed in Milan just two days later via Air Canada, having taken a private jet into Canada first.
Italian authorities have made it clear that they will not extradite Gilley without assurances from the U.S. government that he will not face the death penalty if returned to Texas for trial. This has left prosecutors in a difficult position as they seek his return to stand trial for the murder of Christa Gilley and her unborn child.
Gilley’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin, did not respond to Court TV's request for comment but spoke with Fox26 Houston about the extradition proceedings. During an extradition hearing earlier this week, the Italian court deferred a decision on whether to return Gilley to the United States until further notice.
The case has garnered significant attention due to its shocking nature and the international implications of Gilley’s flight from justice. The lawsuit filed by Christa's parents adds another layer of complexity to an already high-profile legal battle, seeking compensation for their loss while also highlighting the ongoing struggle to bring Gilley back to face charges in Texas.
As the case progresses, all eyes remain on Italian authorities and whether they will eventually agree to extradite Gilley. The outcome could set a precedent for similar cases involving international fugitives accused of violent crimes.
