Philadelphia Water Department Employee Charged in Deadly Police Shooting
A 35-year-old employee of the Philadelphia Water Department is facing murder and attempted murder charges after a violent confrontation with police that left one officer dead and another critically injured. The incident occurred early Saturday morning when Eric Lewis, who prosecutors claim fired on at least eleven officers during an extended standoff in West Philadelphia, was arrested following his discovery hiding in a tree near the scene.
The shooting claimed the life of Shane Seiber, a 40-year-old decorated police officer with ten years of service. Seiber had recently completed SWAT training and previously served at Dover Air Force Base from 2007 to 2015. Despite emergency medical treatment, Seiber succumbed to three gunshot wounds sustained during the confrontation.
A second officer, aged 33 and a father of five children, was struck by twelve bullets and remains in critical condition. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated that the recovery of this officer is uncertain at best. The initial dispatch occurred around 1 a.m., when officers were sent to a home on North 52nd Street following reports of an armed individual outside the residence. Upon arrival, gunfire erupted, prompting a large response involving patrol and tactical units.
District Attorney Larry Krasner reported that Lewis fired toward nine additional officers after the initial confrontation but no further injuries were sustained by law enforcement personnel. Investigators recovered a shotgun and two pistols from the property, including one handgun reportedly taken from one of the wounded officers.
State Representative Amen Brown, who witnessed the arrest near his home, described Lewis as having an extensive criminal record. Additionally, Brown alleged that during the incident, Lewis made statements indicating he wished more officers had died.
Lewis is represented by District Council 33, a union which has expressed sympathy for the victims and promised to assist investigators in their work. The shooting has sparked renewed debate among local officials about public safety measures and behavioral health policies. Mayor Cherelle Parker called for expanding Pennsylvania's involuntary commitment statutes to address serious issues related to substance abuse and mental health.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Seiber. Senator John Fetterman also expressed support for the families of the victims and hopes for the recovery of the surviving officer.
