Trump Fires White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia After Just Five Days
Katie Zacharia's tenure as the White House press secretary came to an abrupt end after only five days in the role. The decision was confirmed by two senior administration officials on Friday, with President Donald Trump expressing his concerns about her performance and the media scrutiny she faced.
Zacharia's short stint has already made history as the briefest term for a White House press secretary in modern times. Her first week was marked by speculation over her legal qualifications and criticism of her initial press briefing, which left President Trump unimpressed.
During Friday’s press conference, Trump told reporters that he had advised Zacharia to reconsider taking on the role due to the intense media scrutiny she faced. "The news has been so nasty to her," Trump said, adding, "I've never seen anything like it actually."
A senior White House official confirmed that President Trump is a fan of Zacharia but acknowledged his concerns about the situation. The president’s decision was reportedly influenced by the revelation that Zacharia had failed her bar exam and was not licensed to practice law in any U.S. state.
Zacharia attempted to address these issues after reports surfaced, explaining to Fox News that she had never retaken the bar exam since moving to China. However, this explanation did not satisfy President Trump's expectations or alleviate his concerns about her qualifications for the position.
The hiring of Zacharia was a decision made solely by President Trump, with significant input from his personal assistant Natalie Harp. The process involved Zacharia flying to Washington and meeting privately with the president on Thursday before being offered the job on Friday.
Prior to selecting Zacharia, Trump had considered other candidates such as former Fox News host Maria Bartiromo and conservative commentator Scott Jennings, but ultimately chose Zacharia despite not knowing her personally beforehand.
Some White House staffers were reportedly concerned about Zacharia's arrival, fearing she might seek to replace them. However, Zacharia denied these rumors and made efforts to ease their concerns.
Despite the controversy surrounding her hiring and subsequent firing, Zacharia is still receiving support from high-ranking officials within the administration. A White House official disclosed that she and her family are scheduled to have dinner with Vice President Vance at his residence tonight.
As of now, there is no immediate rush to find a replacement for Zacharia. Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy reported on Friday that he had spoken with President Trump, who indicated that he was not in a hurry to name a new press secretary.
The rapid turnover and the circumstances surrounding Zacharia's dismissal underscore the highly scrutinized nature of the White House press secretary role and the significant pressures faced by those appointed to it.
