Florida Woman Charged After Allegedly Burying Live Kittens Believed to Be Demons

A 37-year-old woman in Martin County, Florida, has been arrested and charged with four counts of torture after allegedly burying several live kittens alive because she believed they were demons. The incident occurred on October 8 when deputies from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mobile home park following a report that Alba Chavez had buried at least four cats in her yard.

According to the sheriff's office, two of the rescued kittens survived while two others died as a result of being buried alive. Chavez was taken into custody and is currently held without bond pending further investigation. The children who were living with Chavez have been placed under the care of their father following the incident.

Sheriff John M. Budensiek provided additional details about the case the day after the arrest. He stated that according to juveniles in the home, Chavez had thrown two kittens into the trash and later retrieved them before burying them alive. The children attempted to protect the remaining three cats by locking them inside a bedroom but were unable to prevent Chavez from accessing them.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they spoke with Chavez who reportedly admitted that she did not want black or brown cats in her residence because she believed these colors symbolized demons. She then showed the officers where she had buried several kittens and as they began digging, they heard the distressed cries of two surviving kittens.

The ongoing investigation has highlighted concerns about animal welfare and the psychological state of individuals who engage in such extreme actions. Animal rights activists have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for stricter penalties for those who commit acts of cruelty against animals.

This case is part of a broader pattern of incidents involving animal abuse that have garnered significant attention recently. For instance, an elderly Florida man was sentenced to 20 days in jail following the death of an injured dog he had thrown into a dumpster, and another individual, a former college football player, faced arrest after a three-hour police standoff for allegedly beheading a dog with a machete.

The charges against Chavez underscore the legal consequences that can arise from acts of animal cruelty. If convicted, she could face severe penalties under Florida’s laws designed to protect animals from torture and abuse. The case also raises questions about mental health support services and their availability in preventing such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, local authorities are working closely with animal welfare organizations to ensure that all surviving animals receive proper care. Meanwhile, community members have rallied around efforts to raise awareness about recognizing signs of animal cruelty and reporting them promptly to prevent further harm.
