National Guardsman Injured in Southeast DC Shooting; Suspect Arrested
A National Guard member sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting incident that occurred late Sunday night in Southeast Washington, D.C. The event took place around 11 p.m., when seven or eight members of the National Guard were monitoring a situation on the 400 block of 8th Street SE. During their observation, they witnessed a fight break out near the sidewalk and exited their vehicle to intervene.
The intervention quickly turned dangerous as one individual involved in the altercation pulled out a firearm and began shooting. The suspect ignored instructions from the National Guard members to put down the weapon and instead directed his gunfire towards them. In response, the guardsmen returned fire, leading to an exchange that left both the suspect and a guard member injured.
The wounded National Guardsman was shot in the leg while the suspect sustained injuries to the abdomen. Both individuals were promptly transported to local hospitals for treatment and are expected to survive their non-life-threatening wounds. The suspect has since been apprehended by law enforcement authorities.
The incident occurred near the Eastern Market Metro Station, a mile from the Capitol building, outside of Cafe 8, a hookah bar and restaurant that has faced repeated issues involving gunshots in recent times. Councilmember Charles Allen, who represents Ward 6 where the shooting took place, called for an emergency closure of the establishment until it implements significant changes to its operations.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigations Division are currently investigating the incident. According to Jeff Carroll, interim chief of police of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, there is no further threat to the community following the arrest of the suspect.
This shooting comes one year after a similar incident in which two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot near the White House. One of those guardsmen, Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, later succumbed to her injuries, while Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe survived and received the Purple Heart for his service. The ongoing presence of the National Guard in D.C., costing taxpayers approximately $1.5 million per day, is scheduled to continue through January 2029 at a total cost of $1.4 billion.
The repeated involvement of National Guard members in violent incidents underscores the persistent security challenges faced by law enforcement and military personnel deployed in Washington, D.C. This latest shooting highlights the need for continued efforts to address public safety concerns in the nation's capital.
