Surveillance Footage Shows Husband Buying Cleaning Supplies After Wife's Disappearance
Naresh Bhatt, 49, appeared in court Monday as prosecutors presented surveillance footage that allegedly shows him purchasing cleaning supplies and gloves days after his wife, Mamta Kafle, went missing. The footage was part of the ongoing murder trial against Bhatt, who is charged with killing his wife and defiling her body.
Kafle, a nurse from Nepal, vanished on July 30, 2024, but she wasn't reported missing until days later when her colleagues alerted police. Although Kafle's body has never been found, prosecutors have presented evidence suggesting that she was killed at the couple’s home in Manassas, Virginia.
In one instance captured by surveillance cameras, a Home Depot employee testified about footage showing Bhatt arriving at the store on July 30, where he purchased garden gloves. The witness recalled that Bhatt asked about pricing details before making his selection. Another video from Walmart displayed Bhatt browsing household cleaning supplies and purchasing items like air freshener, disinfecting wipes, and bananas.
The surveillance videos also show Bhatt visiting a gas station on August 1, disposing of several items in the trash cans there. These actions have raised suspicions among prosecutors that Bhatt was attempting to cover up any evidence related to his wife's disappearance.
During police interviews, Bhatt maintained that Kafle left voluntarily and could be in Texas or New York. However, investigators found no evidence supporting this claim, leading them to believe she did not leave willingly.
The case has garnered significant attention due to the unusual nature of the evidence presented by prosecutors. While blood and DNA evidence at their home suggest foul play, the lack of a body complicates the prosecution's efforts to secure a conviction. The presentation of surveillance footage in court aims to provide additional context and support for the theory that Bhatt was involved in his wife’s disappearance.
As the trial continues, legal experts are closely watching how the defense will address these new pieces of evidence. The absence of Kafle's body remains a critical issue, as it complicates efforts to definitively prove the nature and extent of her injuries or death.
The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving missing persons cases without physical evidence, especially when dealing with potential domestic violence scenarios involving immigrants. The trial underscores the importance of thorough investigation techniques and the use of technology like surveillance footage in uncovering truths about such tragic disappearances.
