Pentagon Appoints Veteran Tech Expert as Strategic Advisor to CIO
The Department of Defense has announced the appointment of Jon Steinbach as strategic technical advisor to Kirsten Davies, who serves as the Pentagon's Chief Information Officer. This move is part of a broader initiative by Davies aimed at modernizing and streamlining the department’s information technology (IT) infrastructure and software development processes.
Steinbach brings extensive experience from both government and private sectors to his new role. His background includes service with the Central Intelligence Agency, Special Operations Command, and the Marine Corps, as well as senior executive positions in the tech industry where he advised companies on innovation and investment strategies. In his new capacity, Steinbach will provide critical guidance on next-generation technologies and their implications for national security and business operations.
The appointment of Steinbach comes at a time when Davies is actively reshaping her team to address pressing issues such as IT modernization, procurement reforms, and the future direction of cybersecurity initiatives like the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program. The CMMC was previously halted in its second phase due to concerns over compliance burdens on contractors.
Davies emphasized that Steinbach's unique blend of expertise will be instrumental in advancing the department’s digital modernization efforts, enhancing enterprise capabilities, and fostering closer collaboration between the military-industrial complex. "Jon’s insights from decades of work at the intersection of national security, special operations, intelligence, and private sector innovation are invaluable," Davies stated.
In addition to Steinbach's appointment, several other key personnel changes have been made in recent months within the CIO office. Kenneth Nienhuser has taken on the role of deputy chief of staff, while Sonu Shankar began his tenure as principal deputy CIO earlier this year. Prior to these appointments, Davies also named Ryan McArthur as special advisor for capability development and operational excellence, David Vaughn as technical advisor for data infrastructure, Kayla Huthoefer Nelson as chief of staff, and Vishal Aswani as special advisor for transformation.
These strategic hires reflect a concerted effort by the Pentagon leadership to strengthen its technological capabilities in an increasingly digital battlefield. The ongoing recruitment and restructuring within the CIO's office underscore the department’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to maintain national security while improving operational efficiency and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
