Trump Secures Release of U.S. Veteran from Russian Prison After Four-Year Detention

President Donald Trump announced the release of Stephen Hubbard, a retired Air Force veteran and teacher, who had been imprisoned in Russia since 2022 on charges of working as a mercenary for Ukraine. The 74-year-old was freed after spending over four years behind bars following a conviction that carried a sentence of approximately seven years.

Hubbard's release came as a result of negotiations between the U.S. and Russian governments, with Trump personally requesting Putin to grant him freedom. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed the veteran’s release in St. Petersburg on social media, emphasizing that this was not part of any prisoner exchange agreement but rather an act of goodwill from Russia towards the United States.

Hubbard served as an Airman 1st Class with the U.S. Air Force from March 1974 to March 1978, working as an apprentice administration specialist at Mather Air Force Base in California before his discharge. His subsequent service in the Air National Guard has been less documented due to the age of available records.

The release of Hubbard follows a series of diplomatic efforts by Trump's administration aimed at securing the freedom of detained Americans abroad. Earlier this year, the U.S. government successfully negotiated the release of other American citizens held in Russian custody, including Robert Gilman, Ksenia Karelina, and Marc Fogel.

Trump defended his decision to refrain from imposing sanctions on Russia as a condition for Hubbard's release, stating that such measures would have likely prevented the veteran’s return home. The president argued that placing sanctions could lead to harsher sentences or indefinite detention of American citizens in Russian prisons.

Critics within Congress and supporters of Ukraine have expressed concern over Trump’s decision not to enforce new sanctions on Russia aimed at targeting its major oil and gas buyers. These sanctions were intended to pressure the Russian government into ending its support for separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, but Trump's intervention has drawn criticism from lawmakers advocating for a tougher stance against Moscow.

The case of Stephen Hubbard highlights the complex interplay between diplomatic relations and national security policies. While Trump’s approach secured the release of an American citizen, it also underscores ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Russia over issues such as human rights and geopolitical interests in Eastern Europe.
