Parents Charged After 12-Year-Old Girl Wandering Alone for Six Hours Weighing Just 40 Pounds
A 12-year-old girl was discovered alone at a Dunkin' Donuts in Charleston, West Virginia, after wandering around her neighborhood for six hours. The child, who weighed only 40 pounds and appeared severely malnourished, was found by local authorities on October 12th. Officers reported that the girl's condition was so dire that they could see the bone structure of her hands and feet.
Clarence Spotsville and Nuwna Overton, both aged 33, are now facing charges of child neglect creating risk of injury for their failure to ensure the safety and well-being of their daughter. The couple posted a $1,000 bond each and were released from jail following their arrest. According to court records reviewed by Law&Crime, there is no evidence that either parent attempted to contact emergency services or report their child missing during her prolonged absence.
The incident occurred in the early evening when the girl was found at the Dunkin' Donuts located on Oakwood Road in Charleston, approximately half a mile from her home. Upon discovery, first responders immediately transported the 12-year-old to the hospital for medical treatment and evaluation.
During their investigation, police visited the family's residence where they discovered that other children were also under the care of Spotsville and Overton. The current status of the malnourished girl remains uncertain as of now. Law&Crime reached out to the Charleston Police Department for further details but did not receive an immediate response.
The case highlights the severe consequences of neglectful parenting, which can have life-threatening impacts on a child's health and safety. Authorities emphasized that there were no signs of any attempts by the parents to locate their daughter or seek help during her six-hour absence from home.
Local NBC affiliate WSAZ reported that Spotsville and Overton waived their preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, indicating an acknowledgment of the charges against them. This case underscores the critical importance of parental responsibility in safeguarding children's welfare and the potential legal repercussions for failing to do so.
The incident has drawn significant attention from local law enforcement and community members alike, raising questions about the adequacy of current child protection measures and the need for more proactive interventions to prevent such tragic occurrences.
