Florida Patient Damages Surgeon's Tesla After Surgery Cancellation Over Water Intake

A 78-year-old man from The Villages, Florida, has been arrested and charged with damaging his surgeon’s Tesla after the doctor canceled a scheduled surgery due to preoperative instructions being violated. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law & Crime, Glen Lee Ong allegedly used a hammer to inflict damage on the vehicle, causing approximately $1,600 worth of harm.

The incident occurred on September 16 when police were called to a medical building where a Tesla had been damaged. The victim, identified as a surgeon at the practice, reported hearing two loud bangs and discovered that his car's windshield bore two indentations. Security footage from the vehicle captured Ong approaching the car while wearing a surgical mask and striking the windshield twice with what appeared to be a hammer before leaving in another vehicle.

During an interview with law enforcement, Ong initially denied involvement but later admitted to damaging the surgeon’s Tesla. He stated that he had been prepared for surgery when it was canceled because he had consumed water, which contravened preoperative instructions. In his statement, Ong expressed frustration over what he perceived as unfair treatment by the medical staff.

Ong also revealed that he had removed his own license plate before committing the act of vandalism to avoid being identified. He was arrested on October 9 and released from jail the following day after posting bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 3.

The incident highlights tensions between patients and healthcare providers, particularly in cases where strict preoperative guidelines are enforced. Surgeons often advise against drinking water or eating before surgery to prevent complications during anesthesia. However, such cancellations can lead to significant inconvenience and emotional distress for patients who have prepared themselves mentally and physically for the procedure.

This case has garnered attention due to its unusual nature and the extent of the patient’s reaction. It underscores the importance of clear communication between healthcare providers and their patients regarding preoperative instructions and the reasons behind them. The incident also raises questions about how medical facilities handle such situations to prevent escalation and maintain a safe environment for all staff.

The arrest of Ong serves as a reminder that while patients may feel frustrated or aggrieved by cancellations, resorting to vandalism is illegal and can lead to serious legal consequences. Medical professionals are encouraged to document patient interactions meticulously in case of future issues, while law enforcement agencies continue to address such incidents promptly and effectively.

This event has sparked discussions about the need for better understanding between patients and healthcare providers regarding preoperative guidelines and their rationale, aiming to reduce misunderstandings that could lead to similar confrontations in the future.
