Body Camera Footage Reveals Officer Fired Unjustifiably at Car Containing 1-Year-Old Kohen Wiley

The release of body camera footage by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety has provided new insights into the tragic shooting death of one-year-old Kohen Wiley, a Black toddler who died in his mother's arms after police fired shots into their vehicle. The incident occurred in a Walmart parking lot and was initially cleared as justified by the state attorney general following an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).

The newly released videos include body camera footage from Sgt. Hunter Foster, the officer who discharged his weapon, along with redacted versions of previously leaked surveillance footage from both police officers and Walmart cameras. These documents reveal that Foster positioned himself in front of the vehicle as it was moving past him and fired a shot into the passenger side window where Kohen Wiley was seated.

According to Dr. Roger Mitchell, a forensic pathologist hired by Kohen's family, the bullet most likely entered Kohen's body from his right side and exited on his left, consistent with the angle suggested by Foster’s body camera footage. This evidence contradicts the MBI report, which described the shooting as occurring after the car "sped toward the officers," without mentioning that Foster was positioned beside the vehicle when he fired.

The investigative report released alongside the video footage is heavily redacted and omits critical details such as Kohen's cause of death. It also fails to mention that Foster aimed his gun at the moving car, which posed no immediate threat to him or other officers present. This omission significantly alters the narrative presented by the MBI, leading to a conclusion that does not align with the visual evidence provided.

The shooting initially began as a routine pursuit following suspected shoplifting incidents involving Kohen's mother, Vel'lesiya Wiley, and another individual, Latoya Ferrell. The situation escalated when they attempted to flee in their vehicle, prompting police intervention. Despite the lack of immediate danger posed by the fleeing car, Foster fired his weapon, resulting in fatal consequences.

The release of this footage has sparked renewed calls for transparency and accountability within law enforcement practices, particularly regarding the use of lethal force against individuals who do not pose an imminent threat. Critics argue that such incidents highlight systemic issues within policing, including racial disparities and a tendency towards overly aggressive responses to minor infractions.

Sgt. Foster resigned from his position following the release of these findings, acknowledging the controversy surrounding his actions during the incident. The case continues to draw national attention as advocates push for reforms in police conduct and the handling of investigations involving lethal force against civilians.
