Florida Cop Arrested for Allegedly Taking Over Deceased Man's Home
A 35-year-old former police officer from Lauderhill, Florida, has been arrested and charged with several offenses after allegedly taking control of a deceased man’s home following a welfare check in July 2022. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Brian Louis Sguros was involved in a welfare check on Dennis West, who was found deceased inside his residence due to natural causes.
The investigation revealed that after discovering West's death, Sguros allegedly began posing as West’s friend and claimed there were no living relatives. He used his position within law enforcement to gather information about West, including personal identification details. Sguros then proceeded to pay taxes and utilities on the property in West’s name by forging his signature.
Furthermore, it was discovered that Sguros had spent over $214,000 of his own money making renovations to the home under the pretense of preparing it for rental as an Airbnb. He allegedly filed paperwork with the Broward County Property Appraiser's Office in August 2025, stating he took possession of West’s property shortly after the man’s death.
The deception was uncovered when West’s heirs decided to sell the house to a real estate company. Despite being given the keys by Sguros before legal action could be taken against him, the company later filed an unlawful detainer complaint against him. In response, Sguros reportedly filed his own claim seeking reimbursement for the expenses he had incurred on the property.
On October 20, 2023, Sguros was arrested and charged with official misconduct, criminal use of deceased personal identification, criminal use of personal identification information, offense against computer users, and unlawful use of two-way communication devices. He was released on a $25,000 bond but placed on unpaid administrative leave from the Lauderhill Police Department.
The case highlights the potential for abuse of power by individuals in positions of authority and underscores the importance of robust oversight mechanisms to prevent such incidents. The incident also raises concerns about the vulnerability of deceased individuals' personal information and the need for stronger safeguards against identity theft involving the recently departed.
Sguros has maintained that his actions were motivated by a desire to ensure the property was not left unattended or squatted upon, but legal experts suggest this does not justify the alleged misuse of West’s identity and financial resources. The case is ongoing as prosecutors prepare for potential trial proceedings in the coming months.
