Florida Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Missing Mother

In a chilling case that captivated the nation, Shannon Ryan, 44, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on October 23, following his conviction for second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance and death of Leila Cavett. The incident began when Cavett's two-year-old son was found wandering alone in a parking lot near an apartment complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 26, 2020.

Cavett had traveled to Florida from her home in Alabama with her young child and their new pickup truck, which she intended to sell. Two days after the boy's discovery, Cavett’s vehicle was located abandoned in Hollywood, Florida. Ryan, who described himself as a witch, came under suspicion when he posted a Facebook video on August 9, claiming to be the last person to see Cavett alive.

During police interviews and subsequent investigations, detectives uncovered evidence that suggested Ryan had been involved in Cavett's disappearance. They discovered searches on his phone for commercial garbage pickup schedules and methods of eliminating odors, indicating possible plans to dispose of a body. Surveillance footage from a local gas station showed Ryan placing what appeared to be a plastic bag into a dumpster.

Ryan was arrested and charged with kidnapping the child and murder in September 2021 but it wasn't until his trial concluded in September 2026 that he was found guilty of second-degree murder. Despite his testimony at the trial, where he claimed innocence regarding the surveillance footage, prosecutors presented compelling evidence linking him to Cavett's death.

The victim advocate read a statement from Cavett’s son during the sentencing hearing. Now eight years old, the boy expressed his wish for his mother to be present in his life, recalling fond memories they shared and activities he hoped to do with her if she were still alive.

Ryan declined to address the court but indicated that he intends to appeal the verdict. His conviction marks a significant closure for Cavett’s family and community members who had been following the case closely since it began over six years ago.

The case highlights the complexities involved in solving missing persons cases, especially when they involve potential foul play. It also underscores the importance of thorough investigations and persistent law enforcement efforts to bring justice to victims' families, even after long periods without conclusive evidence or leads.
