Smack Technologies Secures $7.5 Million Deal for AI Military Planning Tool with SOCOM

Smack Technologies has secured a significant agreement to prototype its cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) military planning and decision support platform, Omega, in collaboration with the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). The deal is valued up to $7.5 million and aims to enhance joint military operations through advanced AI capabilities.

The Texas-based startup's Founder and CEO, Andy Markoff, revealed details of the agreement ahead of its official announcement on Monday. Omega is designed to streamline command-level planning by generating comprehensive operational objectives, tactics, and tasks that are interconnected as a cohesive plan. This allows commanders to rapidly adjust their strategies in response to changing battlefield conditions.

SOCOM's interest in Smack Technologies' offering stems from the organization's push to integrate frontier AI technologies into its operations. The goal is to address real-world challenges faced by military units and enable leaders to focus on more complex strategic and tactical issues. Markoff emphasized that Omega employs a suite of small, domain-specific models that utilize both classical planning algorithms and deep reinforcement learning techniques.

The platform's resilience against potential threats such as adversarial AI attacks or data poisoning is a key feature. It ensures operational continuity even when cloud connectivity is compromised by running locally on-premises at distributed nodes. This decentralized approach allows each node to operate independently during communication disruptions, transmitting updated information once connectivity resumes.

Moreover, Omega incorporates deterministic and explainable classical planning algorithms alongside generative models, enhancing its reliability and transparency. The system also prioritizes offline learning, validating new data before integrating it into the model's training process. This selective retraining mechanism ensures that only necessary updates are pushed quickly to maintain operational readiness.

Smack Technologies was founded by a team of former Marine Corps special operations veterans, including Markoff himself, who brings firsthand experience in military requirements and challenges. Their deep understanding of the end-user needs has been instrumental in developing Omega's capabilities tailored for military applications.

This agreement with SOCOM builds on Smack Technologies' existing prototyping contracts with other branches of the U.S. military, including the Marines, Air Force, and Navy. Markoff anticipates that Omega will transition into production across multiple military units in the near future, further expanding its impact within the defense sector.

The deal underscores the growing importance of AI-driven solutions in modern military operations, aiming to improve efficiency and effectiveness while addressing critical operational challenges faced by special forces and other elite units.
