U.S. Army’s Last SFAB Unit Facilitates Peace in Southeast Asia Amid Regional Tensions
The United States Army's 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB), the sole remaining specialized unit dedicated to training and advising allied militaries, played a pivotal role in facilitating peace between Thailand and Cambodia last year. The conflict, which had been ongoing for months due to a long-standing border dispute, was eventually resolved through negotiations brokered by ASEAN and Malaysian Land Forces with significant input from U.S. military advisors.
Col. Daniel Hodermarsky, the commander of 5th SFAB, explained that his unit's presence in the region allowed them to provide critical advice and insights during the peace talks. "They asked our advisors for guidance on how to effectively manage the situation," said Col. Hodermarsky. The U.S. Army team was able to offer real-time reporting and strategic recommendations based on their extensive experience with both Thai and Malaysian forces.
The 5th SFAB's involvement underscores the broader importance of these specialized units in maintaining stability within the Indo-Pacific region, where China's growing influence poses a significant challenge. Established in 2017 as part of an initiative to enhance training and advisory roles beyond Afghanistan, SFABs have been instrumental in building partnerships with allied nations.
However, despite their proven effectiveness, most SFAB units were ordered by former Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to be dissolved last year, leaving only the 5th SFAB operational. Critics argue that this reduction could undermine U.S. military readiness and its ability to respond effectively to future conflicts in key regions like Southeast Asia.
The continued existence of the 5th SFAB reflects a recognition by the Department of Defense (DOD) of the ongoing importance of training and advisory missions in top priority areas such as the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM). This unit's far-reaching efforts extend from Mongolia to the Philippines, embedding within professional military academies and advising senior leadership across various countries.
In addition to direct involvement in peace negotiations, 5th SFAB has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for major joint exercises like Balikatan and Cobra Gold. These exercises are crucial for fostering interoperability among allied forces and enhancing collective defense capabilities against emerging threats.
"By maintaining a persistent advisor presence, we can stay engaged with partner units throughout the planning process," Col. Hodermarsky noted. "This allows us to develop tailored training plans that better prepare our allies for potential conflicts."
As tensions continue to rise in Southeast Asia and beyond, the role of specialized advisory units like 5th SFAB remains critical in ensuring regional stability and countering expanding Chinese influence.
