Son Sentenced to Life for Poisoning Mother with Fentanyl in California

A 43-year-old man from San Jose, California, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to the first-degree murder of his mother. Kathleen Dexter, a 72-year-old woman who had worked as a flight attendant for 43 years, died on June 6, 2023, due to fentanyl poisoning.

The tragic incident began when Bradley Dexter, who lived with his mother at the time, allegedly laced her oat milk with fentanyl two weeks before her death. Kathleen Dexter survived this initial attempt but was poisoned again when her son added the drug to her wine, which ultimately led to her fatal overdose. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office confirmed that police suspected a dispute over an inheritance as the motive behind the poisoning.

However, according to Dexter’s sister, Pamela Endsley, Bradley killed their mother for religious reasons, believing she was a sinner and needed punishment. This revelation adds a complex layer of motivation to the case beyond mere financial gain or personal vendetta.

Dexter's father alleged that his son had beaten him with a baton due to drug addiction and anger over inheritance issues before Kathleen’s death. Bradley Dexter was arrested in September 2023 following these allegations, leading to an investigation into his mother's poisoning.

In court on October 21, 2023, Bradley Dexter expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he loved his mother deeply and would give up his own life if it could bring her back. He also cited a mental health crisis, specifically severe psychosis, as contributing factors to the murder. Despite this explanation, the judge ruled that the sentence of 25 years to life was appropriate given the severity of the crime.

Kathleen Dexter’s obituary paints a picture of an adventurous and compassionate woman who found immense joy in raising her grandson over the past 18 years. Her death has left a profound impact on her family and community, highlighting the devastating consequences of drug addiction and mental health issues within families.

This case underscores the growing danger posed by fentanyl, which continues to be a major public health concern due to its potency and ease of availability. The tragic circumstances surrounding Kathleen Dexter’s murder also raise important questions about how society can better support individuals struggling with severe mental health conditions and substance abuse issues.
