Private Prison Firms Donate Millions to GOP Ahead of Midterms

Private prison companies are funneling significant sums into Republican coffers as the 2025-2026 midterm elections approach. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, PACs and executives from three leading private prison firms—CoreCivic, GEO Group, and Management & Training Corporation (MTC)—have collectively donated nearly $1.2 million to candidates, fundraising committees, and political party groups during this election cycle.

A notable contribution came from a subsidiary of The GEO Group, GEO Reentry Services LLC, which made an additional $4.4 million donation to MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting President Donald Trump. This influx of cash underscores the strong financial ties between private prison companies and the Republican Party under Trump's administration.

Since Trump took office for his second term in January 2025, private prison firms have benefited from substantial government contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). CoreCivic and GEO Group alone have received over $1 billion in ICE contracts. As of July this year, approximately 59,000 individuals were detained by ICE, with the majority held in privately operated immigration detention centers.

Truthout conducted an analysis of FEC records to assess campaign contributions made by private prison company PACs and executives during the current election cycle. The investigation revealed that CoreCivic, GEO Group, and MTC's PACs contributed about $774,000, with a significant portion directed towards Republican organizations such as the Republican National Committee (RNC), the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

GEO Group’s PAC was notably more active than those of CoreCivic and MTC, contributing approximately $456,000. Executives from both GEO Group and CoreCivic donated a total of about $375,000 during this period. Notably, Truthout did not identify any donations exceeding the threshold from MTC executives.

While the vast majority of private prison contributions went to Republicans, there were some exceptions. For instance, MTC’s PAC contributed $2,000 to Mississippi Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson's campaign, and CoreCivic’s PAC donated $5,000 to Texas Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar’s leadership PAC. Additionally, CoreCivic’s PAC made a $1,000 donation to the Montana Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.

Among the top recipients of private prison donations were Republican Congressman Andrew Garbarino from New York and Senator Ashley Moody from Florida. Both lawmakers serve on key committees related to homeland security, which oversees ICE operations. CoreCivic, GEO Group, and MTC’s PACs donated a total of $30,000 to Garbarino's campaign.

The substantial financial support from private prison companies highlights the industry's growing influence in Republican politics and its reliance on favorable policies that ensure lucrative government contracts continue to flow their way. This trend raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and the broader implications for immigration reform and criminal justice policy under a Trump administration aligned with powerful corporate interests.
