Charlotte Man's Viral Criticism of Trump Rally Leads to Merch Success

A man who recently went viral for his candid criticism of a Donald Trump campaign rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina, is now capitalizing on the attention by selling merchandise. The incident occurred during an October 29 interview with Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson at the event.

During the live broadcast, Tom Hoyle, co-owner of MadPark Designs—a screen printing business based in Charlotte—made a comparison between Trump supporters and members of Jim Jones' People's Temple cult involved in the Jonestown massacre. "There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man," he said, referring to the crowd gathered at the rally.

Hoyle's comments quickly gained traction on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, with Mother Jones' Instagram reel receiving over 5.3 million views and TMZ’s TikTok clip accumulating more than 206,000 views. The viral nature of this content has continued to grow since its initial posting.

In response to the sudden surge in attention, MadPark Designs launched a line of T-shirts featuring Hoyle's memorable quote alongside a graphic of a skeleton. These shirts are currently available for $28 each on their website. When asked about the merchandise by Axios, Hoyle humorously suggested that some individuals might dress up as him for Halloween.

The incident began when Hoyle planned to disrupt the rally by shouting during Trump’s speech, inspired by similar actions taken at other North Carolina campaign events. However, before he could carry out his plan, a Fox News reporter approached him for an interview. Hoyle later told Axios that this encounter felt like "divine intervention" and that he spontaneously delivered his critique of the crowd.

Following the interview, Secret Service agents arrived to escort Hoyle off the premises. By the time he left Rock Hill, his phone was already buzzing with messages from people who had seen the clip online. The rapid spread of the video highlights the significant impact social media can have on amplifying political commentary and criticism.

Hoyle has expressed interest in developing additional merchandise but is cautious about overextending himself at this stage. His unexpected rise to internet fame underscores the unpredictable nature of viral content and its potential for commercial exploitation, particularly in politically charged environments.
