Early Midterm Races in Florida and South Carolina Could Predict Election Outcome

The 2026 midterm elections are underway, and while Democrats hope for a significant wave of victories, Republicans are closely watching early results to gauge their chances of retaining control over the House or Senate. Key races in states like Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Texas will provide crucial indicators as polls close on Tuesday evening.

In Florida, Democratic Representative Kathy Castor's race in FL-14 is a critical battleground. The district has shifted from a Harris +8 to a Trump +11 advantage due to recent redistricting efforts. If Castor manages to hold her seat despite the swing in favor of Republicans, it could signal a strong Democratic performance across other competitive districts.

Following Florida's quick count results, South Carolina’s Senate race between incumbent Senator Darline Graham and challenger Annie Andrews will be closely monitored. The polls close at 7 pm ET, and any underperformance by Republican candidates here might foreshadow difficulties for the party in more western states as well.

In Virginia, Democrats are eyeing two crucial races: VA-01 and VA-05. These districts have a Trump +5 advantage and a Trump +12 edge respectively. If Democrats can secure either or both of these seats, it would be an early sign of a successful night for the party nationwide.

Another key race to watch is in Kentucky's 6th District where polls close at 6 pm ET. This Republican-leaning district (Trump +15) could see a Democratic victory that would further bolster Democrats’ confidence heading into later results from other states.

Moving westward, Ohio and Texas will also provide important data points as their polls close at 7:30 pm ET and 8 pm ET respectively. In particular, the performance of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his Senate race is crucial for Republicans hoping to maintain their majority.

The evening's results from these early races could set the tone for the entire election night. Party strategists are preparing for a long wait as initial tallies may not fully reveal the overall pattern until later counts come in, especially considering the slower ballot counting processes in some states like Kentucky and the complex ranked-choice voting system in Alaska.

The significance of these early races cannot be overstated; they will likely determine whether Democrats achieve their goal of flipping control or if Republicans manage to hold on despite national trends pointing towards a Democratic surge. As voters across the country head to the polls, all eyes are on Florida, South Carolina, and other key states for early signs of which way the political winds are blowing.
