Civil Rights Icon Jesse Jackson Remembered by Thousands, Former Presidents at Chicago Memorial

Thousands gathered in Chicago on Friday to pay a final public tribute to the late Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement and American politics. The memorial service, held at a prominent South Side church, drew a distinguished lineup of speakers including former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris. Attendees, including NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and actor Tyler Perry, filled the 10,000-seat arena, reflecting Jackson's broad impact.

Obama highlighted Jackson's groundbreaking presidential campaigns in the 1980s, emphasizing how they paved the way for future Black leaders, including his own presidency. Clinton credited Jackson with making him a better president, noting his understanding that change originates from within. The event followed earlier memorial services in Chicago and South Carolina, Jackson's birthplace, underscoring the widespread respect for the protégé of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Jackson, who passed away last month at 84 after a battle with a rare neurological disorder, dedicated his life to advocating for the poor and underrepresented globally. His work encompassed voting rights, healthcare, job opportunities, and education, and he achieved diplomatic successes with world leaders. Through the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he championed Black pride and self-determination, pressuring corporations for a more equitable society.
