NYC Progressive Strategist Advises UK Left on Campaign Tactics
Morris Katz, a key advisor to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, recently traveled to the United Kingdom to share campaign strategies with progressive politicians. Katz, instrumental in Mamdani's successful mayoral bid, met with members of both the Labour and Green parties in February. His visit comes as the Green Party gains momentum, notably winning a Manchester-area parliamentary seat from Labour in a recent special election.
Katz confirmed his engagement in British politics, framing it as part of a broader international progressive struggle. He offered advice on effective campaigning, focusing on the messaging and social media tactics that helped Mamdani connect with voters on "bread-and-butter" issues like childcare costs. Among those he met were Labour MPs Rosie Wrighting and Gordon McKee, and Croydon mayoral candidate Rowenna Davis.
The outreach from British progressive groups underscores a growing international interest in the Mamdani campaign's populist approach. Katz, who continues virtual meetings with UK politicians, stated his engagements were unpaid but expressed openness to future paid collaborations, potentially positioning him as an international political consultant. This mirrors past instances of US progressive advisors assisting British counterparts, such as Bernie Sanders' team aiding Jeremy Corbyn's 2017 campaign.
