Witness Testifies About Plotting Double Murder with Defendant in Ohio Trial
In a gripping testimony during an ongoing murder trial in Belmont, Ohio, Brett Cole, a convicted felon and lifelong friend of the defendant Andrew Griffin, detailed his involvement in planning the murders of Thomas Strussion and Angela Strussion. Griffin, 34, is charged with multiple counts of murder and arson for the deaths that occurred on September 21, 2021.
Cole, currently serving three life sentences for unrelated sexual crimes, testified under an immunity agreement to avoid additional charges. He described his complex relationship with Griffin as akin to a brotherly bond, despite his reluctance to testify due to potential risks in prison for being a witness.
According to Cole’s testimony, the murder plot against Thomas Strussion was conceived after Griffin became a business partner of the victims in their plan to open a Salsa Joe’s restaurant. Initially, Griffin complained about Tom's alleged attempts to put a hit out on him and accused Tom of trying to shift a significant debt owed to local mobsters onto Griffin.
Cole testified that he helped Griffin devise a detailed plan for the killings. He suggested buying a motorcycle with obscured license plates as a means to avoid detection while traveling to the victims' home in Belmont, Ohio. Cole even went so far as to purchase the motorcycle himself and assisted Griffin in planning every step of the operation, including taking pictures on Snapchat and texting Griffin’s wife from his phone.
Despite their extensive planning, Cole emphasized that he did not want Griffin to carry out the murders. He expressed hope that Griffin would be involved in an accident while driving to the victims' home, thereby preventing him from completing the planned killings. However, this wish was unsuccessful as Griffin proceeded with the plan.
Cole’s testimony revealed that Griffin entered the Strussion residence during a time when they were having drinks. According to his account, Griffin shot Tom in the arm first, causing Angela to react and run towards him. This resulted in Griffin shooting Angela multiple times before returning to finish off Tom, effectively making it a double murder.
The prosecution’s case against Griffin is bolstered by Cole's testimony, which provides critical context on the premeditated nature of the crime. The defense has yet to present their counterarguments but will likely focus on questioning the reliability and motivations behind Cole’s testimony due to his criminal background and the immunity deal he received in exchange for his cooperation.
As the trial continues, the implications of this testimony could significantly impact the jury's perception of Griffin's guilt or innocence. The detailed planning described by Cole suggests a level of premeditation that prosecutors will likely argue is indicative of deliberate intent to commit murder, rather than an impulsive act driven by fear or provocation.
