Republican Group Targets Massie Over Iran Stance in Primary Challenge
A Republican political action committee is actively campaigning against Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie in his upcoming primary, specifically highlighting his opposition to military action in Iran. The Republican Jewish Coalition Victory Fund released an advertisement supporting Ed Gallrein, a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump, which criticizes Massie for allegedly siding with "Iran and radical leftists in Congress." This ad, released on Thursday, frames Gallrein as an "American hero" who stands with Trump and the military, contrasting him with Massie's perceived dissent on foreign policy, border issues, and taxes. The move is considered strategically risky, as public opinion polls indicate that military engagement in Iran lacks broad voter approval.
Massie, who faces Gallrein in a May primary, is a prominent target for the Trump faction due to various disagreements, including his successful collaboration with Democratic Representative Ro Khanna to release the Epstein files. In response to the attack, Massie defended his position, stating he aligns with millions of Americans and figures like Donald Trump and JD Vance who advocate for ending "forever wars." He suggests the current opposition stems from his continued commitment to these principles. The ad's release coincided with the House's rejection of an effort led by Massie and Khanna to compel the president to cease military operations in Iran, an outcome Massie nevertheless claimed as a win for putting lawmakers on record regarding the potentially long-term military engagement.
