Former NFL Player Allegedly Consulted ChatGPT for Crime Scene Cover-Up After Girlfriend's Death
A former NFL player is facing first-degree murder and evidence tampering charges after allegedly using ChatGPT to seek advice on concealing a crime scene following his girlfriend's death. Darron Lee, 30, stands accused in the February death of 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo at their Tennessee home, approximately 30 miles from Chattanooga. Prosecutors presented evidence during a preliminary hearing, including transcripts of Lee's alleged conversations with the AI chatbot, where he reportedly sought guidance on how to "cover up a crime scene" and what to tell authorities.
The alleged exchanges with ChatGPT reveal Lee's attempts to frame Perpetuo's injuries as self-inflicted or accidental. He reportedly typed, "Fiancee did her crazy thing again and now she's messed up, I wake up and she has two swollen eyes (I didn't do anything, self-inflicted) she stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk but she isn't waking up or responding. what do I do?" Further inquiries included questions about how slip-and-fall incidents could cause puncture wounds and what to say to a friend to avoid police involvement. These alleged communications occurred roughly 12 hours before Lee called 911, claiming Perpetuo had fallen in the shower.
Investigators discovered a disheveled home with broken glass and blood, suggesting a struggle. An autopsy revealed Perpetuo suffered stab wounds and extensive bruising on her head, eyes, arms, and torso, contradicting Lee's initial account. The judge determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to a grand jury. Lee, a former linebacker drafted by the New York Jets in 2016, remains in custody as the legal process continues.
