Escalating Iran Conflict Sees US-Israel Strikes Intensify, AI Role Questioned

The ongoing U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran continues to escalate, with President Donald Trump indicating a swift conclusion following a surge in oil prices and widespread market instability. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has pledged an intensified bombardment, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," promising "the most fighters, the most bombers, the most strikes." This relentless air campaign has reportedly seen the U.S. and Israeli militaries strike an estimated 1,000 targets daily in the initial phase, hitting approximately 4,000 targets within the first 100 hours of the conflict.

Journalist Hooman Majd notes that "death and destruction from the air" characterize the current operations, while senior reporter Nick Turse highlights the unprecedented scale of the attacks, significantly exceeding previous campaigns like Israel's recent actions in Gaza. Concerns are also rising regarding the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these military operations. Senior technology reporter Sam Biddle warns that AI's ability to accelerate the pace of attacks significantly increases the risk of civilian casualties, even in air warfare already prone to such outcomes.

Biddle emphasizes that the drive to hasten operations, facilitated by AI, amplifies the likelihood of unintended deaths. He cautions against the "stamp of 'intelligence'" that AI companies are promoting, suggesting it could legitimize a faster, more lethal approach to drone and airplane strikes. The use of AI in conflicts raises ethical questions about accountability and the potential for autonomous killing.
