The alert, which circulated among Joint Terrorism Task Force members last month, described an alleged Iranian aspiration to launch drones from an unidentified vessel off the U.S. coast in retaliation for potential U.S. strikes against Iran. While the FBI has since confirmed the intelligence was raw and unverified, issued out of caution rather than an immediate threat, the incident underscores a plausible attack vector that defense experts have highlighted for years.

The unclassified, "law enforcement sensitive" notice explicitly stated it contained "RAW INFORMATION SUBJECT TO REVISION" and was for "SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ONLY," not public dissemination. Despite these caveats, initial media reports omitted the "unverified" nature of the intelligence, leading to widespread concern. The U.S. Coast Guard reportedly provided the underlying intelligence.
